Gentle Wisdom Tooth Extraction in Baton Rouge

Wisdom teeth are the last molars to come in, usually between ages 17 and 25. For many people there isn’t enough room for them. They come in crooked, get stuck under the gums, or crowd the teeth in front of them.

At Pearl Dental Group, our Baton Rouge dentists offer affordable wisdom teeth removal right in our office. We take a careful look at your X-rays first, explain exactly what’s going on, and offer sedation so you can relax through the whole visit. Most patients are back to their normal routines within a few days.

Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out. We'll tell you honestly what yours need.

Do Your Wisdom Teeth Need to Come Out?

Signs You Need Them Removed

If your wisdom teeth came in straight and are easy to clean, we may simply keep an eye on them. Call us if you notice:

  • Pain or pressure in the back of your jaw
  • Red, swollen or tender gums behind your last molars
  • A bad taste or bad breath that won’t go away
  • Trouble opening your mouth all the way
  • Crowding or shifting of your front teeth

Impacted Wisdom Teeth

An impacted wisdom tooth is stuck below the gum line or against the tooth in front of it. You may not feel it at first, but over time it can cause infection, cysts or damage to nearby teeth. Impacted teeth usually need a surgical extraction, which we can often do in our office.

Removal tends to be simpler in your late teens and early twenties, before the roots are fully formed, so we check wisdom teeth during routine visits for teens and young adults.

What to Expect

Consultation and X-rays. We check the position of each wisdom tooth, its roots and nearby nerves, then explain your options.

Comfort. Your mouth is fully numbed. For extra comfort, choose from nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral sedation or IV sedation.

Going home. You’ll leave with gauze and written aftercare instructions. If you had oral or IV sedation, plan for someone to drive you home.

Wisdom Teeth Removal Recovery

Most people feel much better within 3 to 4 days, and the gums keep healing over the next couple of weeks.

  • First 24 hours: some bleeding and swelling. Bite on gauze, rest, and use an ice pack on your cheek.
  • Days 2–3: swelling peaks, then starts to go down. Stick to soft foods.
  • Days 4–7: most patients are back to school or work and eating more normally.
  • 1–2 weeks: gums close over and soreness fades.

Tips for a smooth recovery: eat soft, cool foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes and lukewarm soup. Don’t use a straw, spit forcefully or smoke for at least a few days. Gently rinse with warm salt water starting the day after your procedure, and take any medication exactly as directed.

Call us if you have severe or worsening pain after day 3, a fever, or bleeding that won’t stop. Severe pain a few days in can be a sign of dry socket, which we can treat quickly.

Affordable Wisdom Teeth Removal in Baton Rouge

We keep wisdom tooth extraction affordable, and we’ll give you a clear estimate before treatment so there are no surprises. Your cost depends on how many teeth are removed, whether they’re impacted, and the type of sedation you choose. A tooth that has fully come in costs less to remove than one that’s stuck in the bone.

Many dental insurance plans cover part of wisdom tooth extraction, and we’ll check your benefits for you. Ask about our insurance and financing options if you’d like to spread out payments.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. If your wisdom teeth are fully erupted, healthy and easy to clean, they can often stay. We'll monitor them with X-rays at your regular checkups.

You shouldn't feel pain during the procedure because the area is fully numbed, and sedation is available. Afterward, soreness and swelling are normal for a few days and are usually managed with medication and ice.

It depends on how many teeth are removed and whether they're impacted. We'll give you a time estimate at your consultation.

We offer three options. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) takes the edge off and wears off quickly. Oral sedation is a pill taken before your visit for deeper relaxation. IV sedation provides the deepest level of comfort, and many patients remember little of the procedure. We'll help you choose the right option for you.

If you have only local numbing or nitrous oxide, usually yes. If you have oral or IV sedation, you'll need a responsible adult to drive you home.

Stick to soft, cool foods for the first few days, like yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes and smoothies eaten with a spoon. Avoid straws, crunchy foods and very hot drinks.

Most people return within 2 to 3 days. Plan to take it easy and avoid strenuous exercise for about a week.

Dry socket happens when the blood clot in the empty socket comes loose too early. It causes throbbing pain a few days after surgery. Following your aftercare instructions lowers the risk, and we can treat it quickly if it happens.

Many plans cover part of the cost. Our team will check your benefits and explain your out-of-pocket cost before treatment.
